Community Living is Often the Solution to Loneliness

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports about 14.7 million seniors live alone. We know various causes including chronic and worsening health conditions, hearing loss, no longer driving, mobility issues, loss of a spouse or other loved ones can result in loneliness and isolation for older adults on their own.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Social isolation and loneliness in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States, and puts them at risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions.” They cite statistics showing social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death, and rivals those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. Moreover, studies find social isolation is associated with approximately a 50% increased risk of dementia, a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke. The CDC also warns loneliness is linked to higher risk of depression, suicide and anxiety.

Independent living communities offer older adults a built-in community of people at a similar stage of life as well as a variety of social activities that appeal to many tastes and preferences. The range of amenities and activities make it easy for residents to interact with others and to forge new friendships. Another advantage to 55+ independent living communities is the entire place is designed to accommodate the needs of seniors. This includes apartments with wheelchair accessible doorways, low thresholds, well-lit spaces, handrails, walk-in showers and tubs in bathrooms, and emergency call systems.

At MorningStar of Boise, we provide all the comforts of home with stylish apartments and graciously appointed common areas both inside and out. The Link Between Exercise and Cognitive Health

We know exercise contributes to a person’s overall health and results in stronger muscles, a healthier heart and even a better night’s sleep. Now a neuroscientist is speaking up about the benefits exercise offers to our cognitive health. Wendy Suzuki, PhD, a neuroscientist and professor of Neural Science and Psychology in the Center for Neural Science at New York University, explains, “I’ve found that exercising is one of the most transformative things you can do to improve cognitive abilities, such as learning, thinking, memory, focus and reasoning — all of which can help you become smarter and live longer.”

Suzuki says each time we move our bodies’ beneficial neurotransmitters are released into the brain including dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin and acetylcholine, which transmits signals from nerve cells to target cells. These target cells may be in muscles, glands, or other nerves and can affect our sleep cycles, moods and concentration including a decrease in feelings of depression and anxiety. Research has shown it only takes as little as 10 to 30 minutes of exercise per day to elevate mood.

Another important study shows how exercise promotes neurogenesis (the birth of new brain cells) and improves the brain’s function. The longitudinal study out of Sweden spans 44-years, and reports “women who scored high on a fitness test in midlife were nearly 90 percent less likely than their moderately fit or unfit peers to develop dementia decades later.” Moreover, researchers say the fittest women held dementia at bay at least 10 years longer than their peers. So the next question is how much exercise do we need to get results? Suzuki says to try for 90 to 120 minutes a week. This can be broken down in daily increments or three to four sessions a week.

Creative Ideas for Mother’s Day

This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 14th. Rather than sending a bouquet of flowers this year, show grandma, mom and other moms in your life your appreciation and love by giving your time.

Do something special like planting a new rose bush or a tree, putting in a tray of annuals, or cleaning up the garden in readiness for summer. Commit to helping mom with a DIY house project like painting a room or helping clean up the attic or basement. Give mom and grandma the “day off” by taking over the cooking and cleaning up. For a simple dessert, set up a sundae bar with all the trimmings and let everyone make their own treat.

If mom lives in an apartment, decorate her front door with a wreath or a huge homemade card signed by the whole family telling her how special she is. For a movie-loving mom, make a date to watch one of her favorite romantic comedies together in person or virtually. Other fun ideas include hosting a garden tea party or barbeque, and if you can’t get together, send mom all the goodies you want her to enjoy at a virtual party.

Spend time together baking a fancy dessert or cooking a family favorite recipe for dinner. If mom lives close by, put together a basket of homemade goodies and deliver them to her door. The grandkids can help grandma feel loved by making cards or putting on a talent show or play. You or an older grandchild can “interview” grandma about her childhood and early adult years, wedding day, her years as a parent of small children, jobs etc. Whatever you decide on, just make sure mom feels special.

Increase Your Happiness by Living With Less

Known as the “Minimalists,” Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn spend their time helping people to learn to live with less. They say a typical house contains as many as 300,000 items; and their advice is to rid yourself of items that do not add value to your life. While obviously easier said than done, if you are an older adult who is trying to downsize for a move to senior housing, the following tips may help.

One suggestion is to start by decluttering; not only does it give you more space in your new home but living around clutter has been linked to anxiety and stress. When you throw away or donate stuff cluttering up your home, it gives room for the things you really like. Less stuff lightens your load and helps you get into the habit of not buying things you don’t need. Not only does this mindset save money, but Fields Millburn explains, "Understanding the why behind simplifying gives us the leverage we need to begin to let go and helps us understand what is excess.”

The Minimalists recommend letting go of items you are hanging on to under the “just in case” category. Remember most things can be easily replaced if needed and in the meantime your load will be that much lighter.

Other suggestions include getting rid of blurry or duplicate photos, junk mail, documents and paperwork no longer needed, and old magazines and newspapers. If you want to further reduce your physical load, scan photos as well as paperwork you wish to save. Throw away broken or damaged items, or missing parts. If you have two hair dryers, choose one to keep and one to donate. Do the same with other duplicates. Get rid of books you will never read, clothes that don’t fit or are uncomfortable, and stuff you never use. Do the same with supplies and equipment from hobbies or sports you are no longer interested in; and if you are retired, downsize your professional wardrobe. Use this mindset when going through the rest of your household items.

Financial Scammers Often Target Seniors

Older adults often fall prey to ruthless schemes that rob them of their money and identity. In 2021, over 92,000 victims over the age of 60 reported losses of $1.7 billion to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Complaint Center. The sad part is that it’s often a result of a senior’s trusting nature or feelings of isolation and loneliness; or in some cases, a senior may have cognitive issues that impair their judgement and decision-making skills.

Experts explain there are several reasons why seniors are more susceptible to fraudulent schemes starting with the fact they tend to be very trusting.  Our elderly population was typically raised to be polite and agreeable to others, which in turn can make them more susceptible to fraud. Lonely seniors can easily be preyed upon as they are willing to stay on the phone and engage in conversation with a stranger.

The national council on Aging (NCOA) alerts the public to current scams targeting seniors so if you have a parent or other elderly loved ones who may be at risk, look at the information and discuss the various schemes used with them.  One scam frequently used is for a thief to call unsuspecting victims and pretend to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Social Security Administration, or Medicare. They have many angles such as saying the individual has unpaid taxes or their Social Security or Medicare benefits are in danger of being cut off.  They then demand payment (in the case of unpaid taxes) or ask for personal identifying information, which is then used to commit fraud. These impersonators often “spoof” the actual phone numbers of the government agency, or call from the same area code for Washington, DC, tricking the victim into believing the call is legitimate.

The NCOA says there are ways to avoid getting scammed such as never giving out your personal information to anyone but a trusted family member, friend or your professional financial advisor.  In addition, never make big financial decisions without consulting with one of those trusted people.  Also, do not give out personal PIN numbers, or Medicare and other financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call or know the person.

Other commonsense advice includes being wary of high-pressure salespersons, never signing a contract until you understand it entirely, and to be suspicious of unexpected announcements of winning money, trips, or other prizes.  Experts say it is most likely a hoax.  Always take your time when making financial decisions and do not give blanket approval to a vendor for medical equipment and other purchases.

The Many Reasons for Regular Physical Exercise as You Age

Not only is physical exercise good for our heart and cognitive health but it can help older adults stay steady on their feet. Studies show regular physical activity can reduce the risk of falls in older adults at a high risk of falling by nearly one third.

Experts explain certain kinds of exercise helps increase muscle mass and bone strength as well as improve balance and coordination, fight off osteoporosis, and reduce the risk for fractures and broken bones. Some of the best exercises are known as weight-bearing, which require a person to carry their weight and work against gravity. Examples include walking, dancing, hiking, climbing stairs, jogging and playing tennis or basketball. Doctors say if you can manage it, increasing your pace during aerobics, jogging and power walking make the exercises even more effective at strengthening bone density.

Resistance exercises also work against gravity and help build muscle mass and improve bone strength. Strength training with weights, weight machines or resistance bands are all examples of exercises that rely on muscle contractions that tug on bones to stimulate them to bulk up. Along the same line, impact exercises such as jumping jacks and walking or running uphill have been shown to improve bone density fairly quickly.
Healthcare providers say to be sure to check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program, especially if you're taking medications that slow your coordination or throw off your balance. According to the Surgeon General, your optimal goal should be at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days, preferably daily.

For those of you looking for luxury independent living or assisted living, we encourage you to consider the newly opened MorningStar of Mission Viejo. We make it easy to exercise with a fitness center and swimming pool along with a variety of wellness programs to keep you moving. Facts About Arthritis

In an article in Medical News Today experts discuss some of the common myths and facts regarding arthritis, a condition that causes pain and inflammation in joints. Osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the two main types of arthritis, and a national survey found nearly half of adults 65 years and older have been diagnosed with arthritis. OA, the most common form and leading cause of disability in older adults, is the result of cartilage between the bones in a joint wearing down.

Many people believe arthritis is only a disease of the elderly but RA, while not as common as OA, typically starts in individuals as young as 20 to 40 years old. People also mistakenly think if a joint hurts, it must be arthritis. Doctors say there are several reasons a person may experience pain in and around joints including old injuries, bursitis, and tendinitis.

Another myth is you shouldn’t exercise if you have arthritis; however, studies show exercise can actually help with range of motion and strength in the joint (consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise or activity). The American College of Rheumatology says, “Exercise and arthritis can and should coexist. People with arthritis who exercise regularly have less pain, more energy, improved sleep, and better day-to-day function.”

Then there is the debate on whether heat is better than ice for sore joints. The Guy’s and St Thomas’s National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust in the UK, explains, “Used in the right way, heat can help reduce pain and stiffness in joints and muscles. Cold application can help reduce joint inflammation and swelling.” Moreover, experts say believing arthritis is unpreventable is only partially true as there are things people can do to mitigate risk or slow down the progression such as maintaining a healthy body weight.

Finding the Right Assisted Living Community for You or a Loved One

For anyone considering a move to assisted living, choosing the right community is a big decision as getting it wrong may mean another move within a couple of months. To help, senior living experts say the first thing to do is to think about the level of you or a loved one needs to improve quality of life.

After you have a pretty good idea of what your needs are, now factor in things like location and affordability. If mom or dad needs help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) focus on communities offering assisted living. If you want the home to be a convenient drive for easy visiting, concentrate on those communities. If mom or dad no longer drives, look for a community offering transportation for doctor appointments or errands; or if they plan to bring a car, does it offer parking? Does the home offer 24/7 care, medication management and access to licensed nurses?

Obviously, affordability is an important consideration, but senior living advocates warn don’t be initially shocked at the price. Rather think about all of the living costs such as property taxes, maintenance, utility bills and meals included in the home’s monthly fees. For a better understanding of mom or dad’s assets, it may be worth your while to consult an elder law attorney. They can explore various options such as eligibility for Veterans’ benefits, what your parent’s long-term care insurance may cover, and the advantages of leveraging real estate assets and life insurance, tax benefits and more.

Other things to consider include the physical characteristics of the assisted living community. Does it offer a floorplan that works for you? Do you want amenities such as a fitness center, hair salon, outdoor patio, restaurant-style dining, theater, Wi-Fi, etc.?

For trusted assisted living, Hayward, CA area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar. MorningStar of Hayward’s assisted living lets seniors comfortably and safely age in place with a range of hospitality and care services, resort-style amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. The Benefits of Senior Living Communities

As it turns out, many seniors are quite happy with their decision to move into an independent senior living or assisted living community.  In part, that may be since many of today’s senior communities are loaded with numerous amenities and activities.   As a resident, you are provided with a lifestyle of comfort and community as well as a sense of safety and security.  Here are some of the many benefits:

  • When seniors move out of their family home into a senior community, they find themselves freed from lots of responsibilities.  Owning a home requires routine care and maintenance such as mowing lawns and other housekeeping chores.

  • Seniors often live alone and experience feelings of loneliness and isolation.  Also, as people age, many are reluctant to drive, which means they end up spending a lot of time at home by themselves.  This is something that is not a problem in senior communities.  While activities are optional, there is generally something of interest for everyone.

  • For seniors who do not drive anymore, senior communities usually offer some form of transportation.  In addition, many routinely schedule day trips to activities such as plays, museums, shopping or other events.

  • We also know that many seniors who live alone do not eat well.  In some cases, grocery shopping and preparing food has become difficult.  Many senior communities make healthy, nutritious food a priority and offer choices such as low sodium, no sugar added etc.

  • As an assisted living resident, you will receive help with activities of daily living (ADLs) to provide a better quality of life. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services senior communities provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

  • Finally, we cannot forget the importance of socializing and making new friends at any age.  Even for individuals who value their privacy, there is still the comfort of having other people around.  If the event of a fall or medical emergency, help is always close at hand.

At MorningStar of Mission Viejo, we provide all this and more. Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day dining, game room, theater, fitness center, swimming pool, wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy lifestyle for residents. Basic Guidelines for Choosing a Mobility Aid

Many older adults, especially those in assisted living communities, are no longer as steady on their feet as they used to be.  This puts them in danger of a fall, and a walker, cane or even a wheelchair or scooter is probably advisable.  However, before you start using a hand-me-down walker or buy any-old cane; experts warn that one size does not fit all.  In the case of a walker, to be an effective and safe mobility aid, it is important to have an expert help you pick out the best type and size for your needs.

As AgingCure.com points out, “The wrong device can negatively affect a senior’s stability, cause posture-related problems and even result in pain. Mobility aids come in all shapes and sizes, so selecting the right equipment and achieving a proper fit usually requires a professional’s assistance and expertise.”  To get started determining what your needs are, experts recommend seeing your healthcare provider to discuss any problems you are having with your activities of daily living (ADLs).  If they recognize a need for a mobility aid, they may refer you to an occupational or physical therapist.

The following are a couple of basic guidelines to know before you get started.  A cane can help provide balance and stability and is ideal for someone who needs to support no more than 25% of their body weight.  It is most useful for those minimally impaired or with weakness in one leg.   Walkers are available in a variety of models but regardless of the style a “correct height of a walker is measured from the floor to the wrist, and the elbows should be flexed in a range of 15 to 20 degrees.”  Experts also say the walker must be large enough to provide front and side support for the user.

A motorized scooter may be the answer for someone who has lost the ability to walk any distance but still has an adequate amount of strength in their arms and upper body to stay upright as well as drive the scooter.  Again, there are a variety of models including indoor and outdoor ones as well.  Keep in mind though that most insurance companies and Medicare Part B typically only cover scooters for in-house use.

Keeping Your Brain Healthy as You Age

Research supports the importance of seniors staying physically fit as well as keeping their brains’ fit.  Harvard Health Publishing reports on research with mice and humans that show “brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological ‘plasticity’ and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss.”

Mentally stimulating activities such as trivia and memory games, puzzles, crosswords, board and card games can help maintain brain function.  Even if you don’t have a partner to play with, many of these types of games can be found on a computer or tablet.   Reading, taking courses, drawing, painting and experimenting with things that require manual dexterity are stimulating mental gymnastics.  Other great brain boosters include learning or engaging in creative activities like playing an instrument or dancing.

Board games, such as chess and checkers, require counting, strategy and decision-making. Memory games, scrabble and crosswords can help to improve recall and reduce those times when you cannot get the right word out.  Another added benefit to playing games with others is companionship.

Experts say physical activity is also necessary for good brain health as it increases the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the region of the brain responsible for thought.  It encourages the development of “new nerve cells and increases the connections between brain cells (synapses).”   Another positive side effect of exercise is it also improves your heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure, improving blood sugar balance and reducing mental stress.  Brain health is also improved with good nutrition.   Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, unsaturated oils (olive oil) and plant sources of proteins may help to prevent cognitive impairment and dementia.

Help Ease Your Parent’s Transition to Assisted Living

Many times, a move to assisted living for an elderly loved one is due to an event such as a recent hospitalization for a fall or a worsening medical condition. This means the person does not have the time to process the move from a beloved home, and the sudden change may be very upsetting. Even for seniors who have had the time to plan a move into assisted living, it may be challenging.

At MorningStar of Boise, we know the many benefits senior living communities such as ours afford to residents; but at the same time, we recognize any change is difficult and moving into assisted living is certainly one of those events. In addition to our own experience, experts also offer suggestions to families on how best to support their loved one during the transition.

It may ease the transition for the person to get as familiar as possible with the new community and staff before the move.  Also, after a decision is made, let your loved one decide what furniture and keepsakes they want to move with them and help them decorate.   If possible, arrange furniture and decorations in a similar way and display photos and other keepsakes to make the new place feel like “home.”

Keep in mind the person may feel abandoned, or frustrated with their perceived loss of independence and decision making, and have a hard time adjusting to a change in their routine. Give the person plenty of support during the first days and weeks at the community, but don’t overdo it. This could actually be counterproductive and prevent a loved one from making an adjustment. Instead, emphasizing the move is an opportunity to start a new chapter in their life.

In some cases, seniors make a quick adjustment and recognize the advantage of no longer worrying about their homes’ maintenance or preparing meals. They like the ease of a more robust social life and feel a peace of mind knowing help is around whenever they need it. For others it may take a little more time.

In addition to assisted living, Boise’s MorningStar community offers independent living, respite care (short recuperative stays) or trial stays (from a week to a full month) to see if we are a good fit.  Please visit our website for information on our company’s history, vision, and mission as well as what sets us apart from other senior living options in the area.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Senior Living: How Being in a Community Can Provide Benefits for Your Health and Well-Being

Seniors face unique challenges when it comes to socializing and staying healthy. In senior living communities, you have access to tight-knit groups of peers who enjoy the same lifestyle as you.
Here’s why you should consider senior living and how it can improve your health.

The Importance of Connection After Retirement

Once you retire, you might find yourself navigating a completely new social world. You may not keep in touch with as many people as the workplace offered to you.

Social connection is incredibly important for people throughout all ages and stages of their lives. Socializing can offer you that human connection that makes you feel worthy, needed, and seen in the world. Feeling lonely and isolated can eventually lead to serious health problems.

Improved senior social health is linked to better physical and mental well-being across the board. Unfortunately, this isn’t always easy to accomplish on your own. Senior living communities are designed to foster healthy connections between post-retirement seniors every day.

Senior Living: Organized Activities and Events

Most senior living communities across the U.S. will have organized fitness classes, arts and crafts sessions, and other forms of entertainment for seniors to enjoy.

These coordinated events make socializing easy and convenient for you. You’re already in your community, so why not attend the next concert or outdoor yoga session?

Senior living communities promote gatherings and shared hobbies as a way to stay connected to others. These exclusive events ensure that you never feel alone after retirement.

Easy Access to Medical Care

Senior living communities offer many medical and rehabilitation services for residents who need them. If you have a specific health concern or need additional care, you can find it easily in senior living

Many seniors undergo surgeries and mobility therapies to improve their quality of life. In senior living, your transportation, appointment scheduling, and insurance information are all within easy reach.

You have access to medical assistance and therapy any time you need it when you choose senior living.

Continuing Education

If you have a love for lifelong learning, senior living is perfect for you. Many senior living communities offer continuing education courses about history, science, and other interesting topics.

Continuing education is important for keeping your mind active and engaged throughout the years after retirement. Is there something you’ve always wanted to study? You can finally pursue it in senior living!

Senior Living: Reap the Benefits of Community and Connection

You deserve to enjoy your golden years to the fullest. In senior living, you have access to a wealth of social and health benefits that can improve your quality of life. When you choose senior living, you can make the most out of your post-retirement lifestyle!

Are Assisted Living Expenses Tax-Deductible?

When you move into assisted living, you take on some new expenses. This can urge you to consider whether any of these expenses can cut you a tax break.

The answer is highly dependent on your individual situation, but there are some general tips you can follow for navigating assisted living and tax deductions.

Here’s what you should know about assisted living expenses when tax time rolls around.

The Purpose of Tax Deductions

Every adult earning income in the country has to pay federal taxes (and state taxes, where applicable). If you have any type of income coming into your household each year, even retirement funds, you must pay taxes on it.

Tax deductions can be very helpful when it comes time to pay the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The IRS allows some expenses to reduce your total tax liability by deducting them from your earned income.

Many medical, rehabilitation, and care expenses qualify as tax deductions. However, assisted living can be trickier because of the long-term nature of the care you receive and the varied expenses.

Generally speaking, a portion of your expenses in assisted living should qualify you for tax deductions.

Medical Expense Deductions

When you pay for any type of medical or dental care, it counts toward the yearly threshold that qualifies you for tax deductions.

Medical expenses that account for more than 7.5% of your annual adjusted gross income (AGI) can be written off on your taxes. This comes with some restrictions, but it’s good news for folks in assisted living.

Requirement 1: Resident Is Defined as Chronically Ill

For your assisted living expenses to qualify as tax deductions, you must be considered chronically ill.

The IRS defines chronically ill as being “unable to perform a minimum of two activities of daily living…on [your] own.” Chronically ill also includes those who need “substantial supervision because of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or another severe cognitive impairment for 90 days.”

A physician or other licensed healthcare worker must verify that you are considered chronically ill in order for your expenses to qualify.

Requirement 2: Resident Is Prescribed a Plan of Care

A healthcare worker must also prescribe you a defined plan of care that matches your qualification as a chronically ill individual.

This is a part of the moving process when you choose an assisted living facility. You will receive assessments and care plans from a qualified team of professionals.

Get More Guidance from Your Assisted Living Facility

Specific tax advice should always come from a tax advisor or knowledgeable staff member at your assisted living facility. They know which expenses are commonly deductible and which may not qualify.
If you have any concerns, make sure to bring them up to the appropriate staff in your community. They are more than happy to help you!

A Guide to Terms You Might Hear in Senior Living Communities

Moving to a senior living community can be exciting and rejuvenating. You get to enjoy a robust social life with plenty of healthy and interesting activities each day.

If you are moving to a senior living community, there are some acronyms and phrases that you will often hear while you’re there. Take a look at these common senior living terms, along with some tips on how to use them correctly.

Medical Terms

Many residents of senior living communities have specific health issues that require frequent medical care. Here are some of the medical terms you should know:

HIPAA

HIPAA refers to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. This term usually comes up in matters of patient privacy and protected healthcare information (PHI).

Essentially, HIPAA protects any sensitive health information from being revealed to third parties without your permission. Your privacy matters in senior living

Hospice

Hospice care is designed to make the end of someone’s life as comfortable and dignified as possible. When someone’s health is on an irreversible decline, hospice staff ensure that they get the comfort care they deserve.

LTC

LTC stands for long-term care. In senior living, this refers to residents who need round-the-clock assistance and medical care.

Long-term care is usually permanent due to an injury or progressive illness that will not improve over time. Memory care is a form of long-term care.

Palliative Care

Palliative care is comfort-centered care. Unlike hospice care, palliative care does not always signify the end of a patient’s life. Many patients with chronic but non-fatal conditions benefit from palliative care.

General Terms

As an applicant or current resident of a senior living community, knowing certain important terms can help you better navigate your living situation.

PASARR

PASARR stands for Pre-Admission Screening and Annual Resident Review. In short, PASARR checks for symptoms of mental illness and developmental disabilities.

This is to ensure that residents get the proper level of care that they need. Sometimes residents need to be transferred to a more appropriate medical setting rather than remaining in senior living.

Resident AssessmentAs an applicant or resident, you will likely undergo periodic resident assessments. These are observations of your cognitive, physical, and functional capabilities.

If needed, your medical team and approved loved ones will help you figure out the best treatment plan to help you regain mobility and maintain stable health.

Resident Care Plan

Resident care plans are just as they sound — comprehensive plans to enhance your physical, mental, and social health.

Insurance companies require residents of senior living communities to have a resident care plan at all times. This is to ensure that you receive care that will help your health improve.

Learning Important Senior Living Terms Will Set You Up for Success

If you want to join a senior living community, one of the best steps you can take is to learn the appropriate terminology. This will help you navigate the medical, residential, and financial transitions involved in moving to senior living.
And of course, if you encounter a term you aren’t familiar with, you are always welcome to reach out to staff for clarification.

4 Key Amenities to Look for in Memory Care Facilities

When you move your loved one into memory care, you expect their life to be enriched and fulfilling. With the right amenities, your loved one will thrive in their new community.
Here are some of the most important amenities to watch for when touring and researching memory care facilities.

1. Nutrition Programs

Your loved one will likely need help with meals as their memory problems progress. Nutrition is key to preventing many age-related diseases. Even if your loved one’s physical health is declining, they will still benefit from good nutrition and balanced meals.

High-quality memory care facilities provide nutrition and wellness programs to ensure that your loved one gets the nutrients they need.

Most nutrition programs in memory care facilities include nutrition counseling, flexible meal options for residents, and residents’ classic favorite dishes.

2. Pools for Water Fitness

A swimming pool might sound like more of a danger than an amenity, but don’t worry. In memory care facilities, trained staff closely supervise residents who participate in water fitness.

It’s important to find a memory care community that has at least one swimming pool. Aquatic fitness and water therapy are very beneficial for aging adults.

The water takes the pressure off of seniors’ joints so that they can still enjoy healthy movement. This becomes more important as seniors age; physical activity is a major predictor of lifespan and general health.

3. Arts and Crafts Events

Creativity is a wonderful outlet for aging adults who struggle with memory problems. In memory care, your loved one can enjoy different arts and crafts projects with other residents.

These classes may include painting, drawing, crocheting, knitting, and making collages. Arts and crafts sessions in memory care are wonderful opportunities for senior socialization, which has a wealth of mental health benefits.

It’s important for your loved one to engage in enriching activities that use their natural creativity. It will help their brain stay sharper and healthier as they age.

4. Outdoor Paths and Trails

Outdoor movement and sun exposure are both key to your loved one’s physical and mental well-being in memory care.

Sun exposure will increase your loved one’s vitamin D levels, which boosts their mood over time. In fact, being outdoors has a mood-lifting effect on people of all ages.

Many facilities are located near park trails, walking pathways, and tracks that seniors can enjoy during good weather. Look for outdoor fitness classes and supervised group walks and hikes at your loved one’s memory care facility.

Choose the Best Memory Care for Your Loved One

Don’t skip amenities when researching the best memory care facilities in your area. Your loved one will thrive in memory care with access to enriching, convenient amenities.
