Communication Tips for the Different Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease
The Alzheimer’s Association has some effective tips for communicating with a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. As the ability to find the right words or to speak at all is one of the effects of the devastating disease, it is helpful to learn some tips to make the communication process easier.
Typically, in the early stages of the disease, individuals repeat themselves often and can easily lose their train of thought. They may start to avoid speaking and have trouble following a conversation, and may even use gestures rather than words. Experts suggest at this stage that you make sure to address the person directly, don’t speak through a caregiver, and allow them plenty of time to answer you back.
The middle stages of the disease can signal lots of changes and usually lasts the longest. If you wish to speak with the individual, make sure to do it in a quiet space without any distractions. Your questions should be short and only require a simple yes or no answer, and again, look directly at the person. In addition, you can demonstrate the task or give clear, step-by-step instructions. Also use a soft voice and calm demeanor, and above all else, be patient and loving.
In the late stages of the disease, which can last from a few weeks to several years, the Alzheimer’s Association suggests using nonverbal forms of communication. When entering the person’s presence, always identify yourself and use the sound of your voice to convey the meaning of your words. Experts recommend using touch, sight, sound, smell and taste to communicate, and as always, treat the individual with respect and dignity.

Why Some Seniors Bruise Easily
As we age, many seniors discover new bruises on their body but have no memory of how they got there. The Medical News Today (MNT) explains this may be the result of the skin thinning and blood vessels weakening and/or that some people are just more prone to bruising. It can also run in families. Being a frequent, extreme bruiser includes having many bruises without remembering their cause; regularly developing bruises that take many weeks to heal and bleeding for longer than 10 minutes following an injury.
Excessive bruising and bleeding can be from medications, many of which seniors routinely take. These include drugs like warfarin, heparin, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, apixaban and aspirin. Doctors say even certain herbal remedies such as ginkgo biloba, ginseng, feverfew, large quantities of garlic, ginger, and willow bark can increase the risk of bleeding or cause a change to blood vessels. The same is true for drugs like corticosteroids and glucocorticoids of which one example is prednisone.
MNT reports liver disease is also associated with excessive bruising. “As the disease progresses, the liver may stop producing the proteins that help the blood clot. As a result, a person may experience excessive bleeding and easy bruising.” Other blood disorders and diseases such as hemophilia, senile purpura, or even vitamin deficiencies can include bruising as a symptom. Experts say consult your healthcare provider if you suddenly begin bruising more easily, have symptoms such as yellow skin, fever and low energy, taking medication and begin bruising, or getting painful bruises that are slow to heal.

Senior Living Offers a Community of Friends
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 33% of women and 20% of men 65 years and older lived by themselves in 2020. Experts say living alone doesn’t necessarily mean an individual is lonely, but it often is the case.
Problems contributing to loneliness in seniors are that most no longer work outside the home and social circles begin to shrink with the passing of spouses or friends, and family members moving away. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) cites studies showing seniors who say they feel socially isolated and lonely are more at risk for health problems such as cognitive decline, depression, and heart disease associated with loneliness.
For many seniors the answer is moving to a retirement community where they find comfort, wellbeing and security as well as companionship. The experts at AgingCare.com say one of the biggest advantages of senior living (aside from receiving necessary care) is that opportunities for socialization and fulfillment are available right outside a resident’s door.
Independent living communities are ideal for active seniors who do not need care services but love the idea of built-in social and mental stimulation within a maintenance-free environment. They may offer amenities such as meal plans, housekeeping and transportation along with meaningful wellness programs. Assisted living is designed after the European model and provides a supportive, compassionate environment with the right amount of help seniors need to maintain their independence.
Lastly, another form of senior living is memory care that is devoted to the specialized care of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. The best communities offer their residents comprehensive care that includes recreational and purposeful activities, scheduled outings and daily health monitoring.
MorningStar of Hayward is a 55+ community that offers seniors a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and as much or as little social engagement as you want. MorningStar of Hayward Serves Healthy, Delicious Meals
As people age, many find their appetites have diminished or they suffer from physical or medical conditions that make eating more difficult. Therefore, the nutritional value found in the foods they do consume is important, and even today, many seniors have an “inadequate intake of vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, folic acid, calcium, and niacin.”
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) advise that people over the age of 50 follow the USDA food recommendations, which should help keep older adults feeling more vital, and thus healthier. They also point out the earlier you start eating a nutrient-rich diet, the more effective it will be later down the road. Recommendations include a daily diet of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy. It also includes eating foods with healthy fats such as olives, nuts, and avocados.
MorningStar Senior Living of Hayward is proud to offer our residents daily meals that are full of the freshest ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced when possible. Our delicious meals are prepared largely from scratch and take into account seniors’ dietary restrictions. We offer a range of choices including low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat that allows our residents to self-manage. MorningStar’s food service is overseen by our own Executive Chef, who welcomes resident feedback and often tailors our menus per their suggestions.

Preparing for Your Next Doctor’s Visit
The National Institute on Aging wants everyone to know asking questions at medical appointments is a good thing but remember, a doctor only has so much time allocated to each patient so come prepared. Their advice includes asking for clarification whenever the doctor uses a term to describe a medical condition you are unfamiliar with. Also, be sure you understand how and when to take a new medication. For example if it should be taken with food, does that mean before, during or after a meal?
If your physician wants you to have a test done, find out why and what sort of preparation it will entail. Ask if there are any side effects or danger getting tested, and how long it will take to get the results. You may want to request a copy of the results, and if a specialist is doing the test, make sure they send the results to your physician.
Once results are in, your doctor will most likely make a diagnosis based on your symptoms, your physical exam, lab work and medical tests. Ask your doctor to describe the condition, how serious it is, if it is a long-term disease and/or curable, and what is the best course of treatment. If it includes medications, ask why you are taking it, the side effects and how long you will be on it.
If the doctor recommends surgery, ask why he/she is recommending it, the risks and benefits, and if there are alternatives to surgery. How expensive is the procedure, will you be hospitalized and how long is the recovery period? The Cleveland Clinic explains taking an active role in your medical care has many advantages and ensures you are equipped with the information you need for your utmost health and safety.

What’s the Difference Between Independent Living and Assisted Living?
Often families are confused with the terms “independent living” and “assisted living” and are not sure which one is best suited for their needs. To clarify, the term independent living is used to describe senior living communities that are designed specifically for seniors 55 and older who want to and are able to live without any help. Assisted living is designed for seniors who still wish to live independently with personal privacy and autonomy but require assistance in their daily lives.
Independent living is ideal for individuals who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle. While each community can vary, many offer amenities such as social activities, day trips and meals. Senior independent communities offer residents the freedom to enjoy their retirement years without being tied down with routine chores that need to be done when owning a home.
At assisted living communities, residents get help with daily personal care and are provided with an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24-hour supervision. Generally a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family. Other amenities offered by assisted living communities may include a range of activities and wellness programs.

February is American Heart Month
The CDC says February is American Heart Month, making it the time to focus on cardiovascular disease. Experts say this includes shining a light on hypertension (high blood pressure), a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s National Wear Red Day® is on the first Friday in February. The campaign encourages people to show their support by wearing red and encouraging family, friends and co-workers to do the same.
Focusing on heart disease is important as it is the leading cause of death in the US for both men and women; and the awareness campaign helps people to realize it is largely preventable. Experts stress that every adult should be aware of their risk and know the healthy choices to make to reduce their chance of heart disease including coronary heart disease, which is the primary cause of heart attacks.
The NIH explains your risk of heart disease is higher if you:
Have high blood pressure
Have high blood cholesterol
Are overweight or obese
Have prediabetes or diabetes
Smoke
Do not get regular physical activity
Have a family history of early heart disease (your father or brother was diagnosed before age 55, or your mother or sister was diagnosed before age 65)
Have a history of preeclampsia (a sudden rise in blood pressure and too much protein in the urine during pregnancy)
Have unhealthy eating behaviors
Are older (age 55 or older for women or age 45 or older for men)
Experts say for each risk you have, the higher your overall risk is for heart disease. While some risks cannot be helped such as your gender, age and family history, it is important to discuss with your healthcare provider what you can do to reduce your risk. Also the NIH says it can be helpful to join #OurHearts in Action, a group designed to encourage and motivate heart-healthy behaviors together.

Stay Actively Engaged with a New Hobby
For many, retirement means an end to a long career and a busier lifestyle. As relaxing as that sounds, research shows it is important for people to continue to feel actively engaged regardless of their age. One interesting and fun way to do it is with a hobby as they are a good way to keep our brains sharp, relieve stress and anxiety, and lessen obsessive thoughts and preoccupations.
One example of an all-around hobby is gardening. Not only does the person benefit from their labor in the form of flowers, fruits or vegetables, experts say gardening offers physical and mental benefits. These include reducing stress, giving the person a sense of achievement, getting out into fresh air and staying fit. If you are worrying about the physical work involved in gardening, there are tools and methods designed to make it easier. Raised beds eliminate the need for bending and kneeling on the ground as does vertical gardening that keeps things at arms’ reach.
Another hobby beneficial for seniors is playing a musical instrument. For instance, when playing the piano, the hands and brain have to coordinate. The bilateral (two-sided) movements fire neurons all over the brain and stimulate a whole range of brain functions that provide numerous benefits. If you aren’t musical, consider knitting as it offers the same two-sided movements along with the satisfaction of creating a baby blanket for a little one or a pair of socks for a homeless shelter.
Working on jigsaw puzzles, coloring, birdwatching and photography are all calming, brain stimulating, fun activities. Experts say many hobbies do not require a commitment, and if at first you don’t find something to keep your interest, give another one a try.

Age-related Macular Degeneration is a Leading Cause of Vision Loss in Seniors
Just as the rest of our body ages, so do our eyes. Older adults often complain of dry, teary or tired eyes and may have problems driving at night, experience flashes and floaters or need glasses to read. As we grow older we are also at a higher risk for serious eye diseases that can impact our vision.
One of the most common and serious eye diseases is age-related macular degeneration and is a leading cause of vision loss among people aged 50 and older. The American Macular Degeneration Foundation reports age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is more common than cataracts and glaucoma combined. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention projects by 2050 the number of older Americans with the disease will nearly double from 48 million to 88 million.
Age-related macular degeneration causes the macula, a part of the back of the eye near the retina, to deteriorate. Experts say while it doesn’t impact peripheral vision, macular degeneration can affect how well a person sees what’s right in front of them.
You are at a higher risk of getting AMD if a relative has had it or you are Caucasian, and white females tend to come down with AMD earlier than white males. Lifestyle choices also increase your risk for AMD including smoking along with elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Sun exposure is another risk factor and doctors recommend wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Maintaining a healthy diet by eating foods high in antioxidants like lutein found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach are beneficial for our eye health.
Symptoms of AMD include visual distortions and can make straight lines appear bent, reduce central vision in one or both eyes, increase blurriness of printed words, and the need for brighter light when reading or doing close-up work. The first signs of AMD are typically discovered by an eye doctor during an annual dilated eye exam.

Give up Home Maintenance and Spend More Time Doing What You Love
Did you know more and more older adults are making the choice to move into senior living communities? Seniors are embracing the idea of giving up home maintenance and spending more time doing what they love best including being able to travel without worry. Independent living communities offer private apartments designed to meet residents’ needs along with common areas ideal for sitting and relaxing with friends and dining rooms offering delicious restaurant-style meals.
Another reason many seniors are choosing independent living communities is the appeal of living among like-minded people of the same age. Socializing is important to our wellbeing and isolation can lead to depression or worsen health problems. For seniors who no longer work and/or have stopped or limited their driving, it can get more and more difficult to maintain normal social interactions. Community living offers easy opportunities for residents to meet new friends or engage in social activities and special events.
At senior living communities such as the new MorningStar of Mission Viejo, we will offer transportation services for medical appointments and take to the road every so often for organized activities and cultural events. We will also bring in live entertainment and host special events throughout the year. Wellness activities will include exercise classes, life enrichment classes and more. We also know security is important to peace of mind, and community living gives that to seniors and their families.
Opening in May 2023, MorningStar of Mission Viejo will be filled with spacious, beautifully appointed common areas both inside and out and include a swimming pool, sky terraces, art studio, theatre, salon and fitness center. Residents will enjoy all-day, restaurant-style dining inspired by our Executive Chef that features the freshest ingredients from high quality producers, locally sourced when possible.
Along with independent living, MorningStar of Mission Viejo will have suites for assisted living for those who need help with the activities of daily living. The Reflections Neighborhood will provide additional suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. The New Year May be the Time for a Move to an Assisted Living Community
Over the holidays many adult children have the opportunity to spend more time visiting with their parents in person rather than on the phone or over a video call. It is also the time when many families discover mom or dad living on their own isn’t working, and they are not actually doing as well as everyone thought.
Experts say there are some signs to look for when visiting an elderly parent to determine if they need more help in their day-to-day life. One cause for concern can be if they have had an unintended change in their weight. Experts say weight loss is a common sign of a senior not doing well on their own. The same goes if they appear to have had a change in their balance and mobility such as difficulty getting up from a chair or walking up or down stairs, which could result in a higher risk of a fall.
Another component of an older person’s wellbeing includes their emotional state. Do they have opportunities to get out and about and socialize or are they spending a lot of time alone and showing signs of forgetfulness or confusion? Is your formerly neat-as a pin mother now living in a home that looks neglected and untidy or is she herself looking ungroomed?
Senior living specialists explain an elderly person’s physical and mental state can decline quickly and often catch families by surprise. If you find yourself in such a situation, it may be time to have a conversation with your parents regarding in-home help or a move to an assisted living community. Homes such as MorningStar of Hayward offer area seniors a wide array of amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities that help nurture residents’ independence for the best quality of life.

Lifestyle Changes Can Mean Living a Happier, Longer Life
It is never too late to improve our health and making changes in our behaviors and attitudes can mean living a happier, longer life. Doctors say getting your weight under control, quitting smoking, eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising can all significantly improve your health and longevity at any age.
Remember taking care of our health also includes our brains. Experts used to believe the brain could not make new neuron connections as we aged but research now shows the “brain remains nimble and capable of physical change and growth throughout life.” In fact studies find that people, who step out of their comfort zone and try new hobbies and interests, can improve their cognitive health.
Another misconception is thinking it is too late to start exercising or to lose weight. A meta-analysis of 39 studies on aging and resistance-type exercises such as lifting weights or using exercise bands, found it is possible to build muscle mass no matter what age. In the studies, “1,300 adults over the age of 50 who did some form of this kind of training, muscle mass increased by an average of nearly 2.5 pounds in just five months.”
Being positive is a trait that helps people deal more effectively with stress and worry and is linked to longevity. Researchers also find it is better for us to be in charge of our own medical care. One way to do this is to stay up-to-date on medical research and advice regarding care options as well as asking pertinent questions of our healthcare providers. Other things we can do to protect our health is to get appropriate screenings and tests, use our time productively and stay socially engaged.

More Ways to Enjoy Independent Living To The Fullest
Independent living is a great option for seniors who are healthy and active. There are many benefits to independent living, including the ability to live in your own home or apartment, socialize with other residents, and enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle. If you are considering independent living, here are more tips to help you enjoy it to the fullest!
Connect with Friends and Family
Living independently can be a great way to maintain your independence, but it’s important to stay connected with your friends and family. Technology makes it easier than ever to stay in touch, no matter where you are. Make sure to use video calls, emails, and texts to keep in touch with those that matter to you.
Learn a New Language
Contrary to popular belief, you can pick up a language at any age. Whether you’re planning to visit a new country, understand foreign soap operas and dramas without subtitles, or just want to keep your mind active, having a new language under your belt can be achieved as long as you’re consistent. There are many language classes you can take online, as well as prepared learning plans you can follow at your own pace. Just be consistent, and you’ll be speaking that language in no time.
Live Your Best Life!
Living independently can be a great way to enjoy your retirement years. Life is precious and there’s no time like the present to enjoy it to the fullest! How To Enjoy Independent Living To The Fullest
Independent living is a popular living arrangement for seniors who want to maintain their independence and live in their own homes or apartments. It also offers a way for seniors to socialize and interact with other residents. If you are considering independent living, here are a few tips to help you enjoy it to the fullest!
Get Involved in Your Community
Independent living can be a great way to stay connected to your community. Many senior living communities offer a variety of activities such as classes, clubs, and social gatherings. Participating in these activities is a great way to stay active, meet new people, and make lasting friendships. It’s also a good way to stay informed about local news and events. Many senior living communities also partner with local businesses and organizations to provide discounts and benefits. Getting involved in your community is a great way to make the most of your independent living experience.
Make Your Home Your Own
Although independent living allows you to receive the help you need while living in the comfort of your own home or apartment, it’s important to make your home your own. Take the time to decorate your space and make it a reflection of your style and personality. Add personal touches, like family photos, artwork, or items that reflect your hobbies and interests. Personalizing your space will also make it more comfortable and inviting to family and friends.
Stay Active and Engaged
Independent living is a great way to stay active and engaged. Many senior living communities offer a variety of activities, such as fitness classes, trips, and educational seminars. There are also social events, such as happy hours and movie nights, that you can attend. Staying active and engaged can help you stay sharp and maintain a healthy lifestyle. It can also be a great way to meet other residents and make new friends.

The Benefits of Getting Enough Sleep
The American Heart Association offers a checklist of eight key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. The Life’s Essential 8 is designed to highlight things we can do to lower our risk for heart disease, stroke and other major health problems.
In 2022, the Association added sleep duration to the list as a component of heart health. They say the amount and quality of sleep can influence a person’s eating habits, mood, memory, internal organs and more.
One advantage to getting enough sleep is being more productive. After spending years working long hours to the detriment of a good night's sleep, Ariana Huffington now says, “The irony is that a lot of people forgo sleep in the name of productivity. But in fact our productivity is reduced substantially when we’re sleep deprived.”
Professor of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Charles Czeisler, explains being sleep deprived can impair your abilities and is similar to being drunk. Poor sleep habits can cause you to eat more in an effort to feel more energetic, and may increase your risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
It is recommended adults get a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day and a sleep routine will help you achieve this goal. Start by going to bed each night around the same time so you can wake up refreshed at the same time each morning. If possible, open your curtains to let in the morning sunshine or turn on the bedroom lights. Research still shows breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should consist of healthy foods.
Another thing to get your day off right is to take a few minutes each morning doing something like practicing mindfulness or yoga. The other Life’s Essential 8 include maintaining a healthy diet, fitness, quitting nicotine, losing weight, and watching your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk for diabetes.
