Senior Living Outside: 5 Ways to Get Out and Enjoy the Sunshine This Summer

Senior living is all about recreation, comfort, and community. You don’t have to stay indoors all summer long while the sun is shining!

If you’re looking for some fun outdoor activities to enjoy this summer, here are five ideas to get you started:

1. Go for a Bike Ride with Friends

Bicycling is a great way to stay active without putting too much pressure on your joints.

When you pedal a bicycle, your joints move smoothly without the impact of the pavement beneath you. This allows your body to continuously produce fluid motions, even if you struggle with joint pain and discomfort.
Bring along a few friends to make your biking fun in the sun even more enjoyable.

2. Enjoy Your Community’s Outdoor Swimming Pool

Most senior living communities have a large outdoor swimming area for residents to enjoy when it’s warm outside. Take advantage of this luxurious amenity!

Water fitness is popular among older adults because it’s both gentle and effective.

If you struggle with stiff joints, weight control, or other health problems, swimming outdoors can be a great way to relax and get some physical activity in at the same time.

3. Start a Garden

Gardening doesn’t have to be done on the hard ground while you kneel uncomfortably in the hot sun. In fact, many modern gardens in senior living communities are placed on balconies and other accessible areas.

Additionally, raised beds offer a great way to garden without kneeling. Some raised beds can even allow you to garden at waist level or higher.

Studies have shown that gardening boosts feelings of happiness and productivity, especially in older adults. Buy some seeds, pots, and a watering can, and get started this summer!

4. Join Outdoor Group Fitness Classes

Most senior living communities offer group fitness activities. See if your instructor is willing to move one of the classes outside when the weather is especially beautiful.

Practicing group fitness creates a sense of community among senior living residents. Those who move together, stay together!

Outdoor fitness classes can include Zumba, yoga, and aerobic exercises.

5. Dine Outside

Whether you’re at a nearby restaurant or simply sitting on your balcony or in a common area outdoors, it’s always a good idea to eat outside in the summer. You don’t have to engage in strenuous exercise to get your daily dose of vitamin D.

You can arrange for a group meal outside with other residents to soak up the socialization and sunshine together.

Stay Active and Outdoorsy

This SummerSenior living communities offer a range of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Get up and moving this summer with these five activities and more at your senior living community!

Enjoy the Day by Working in the Garden

A garden full of beautiful flowers and/or home-grown vegetables is a gratifying pastime for many seniors. Not only does it offer beauty and wholesome, nutritional food for you and those you share your bounty with, but a healthier lifestyle.

Experts say getting outside to work in the garden is a wonderful way to get exercise and enjoy nature as well as to get a dose of vitamin D. They warn to protect your exposed skin with a sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher, wear light, loose clothing, and sunglasses to protect your eyes. Be sure to take frequent breaks, stay hydrated and don’t overdo it, and avoid working outside during the heat of the day. Gardening is a great way to reduce anxiety and stress and to forget about your problems, at least for a while. Overall, even a few hours a week doing something as enjoyable as gardening can strengthen muscles, improve mobility and increase flexibility.

Growing tomatoes and lettuce or starting an herb garden is a great place for beginners to start and are appropriate plants for container gardening. For flowers, stick to those suitable for your region. Planning your garden is a big part of the fun and involves critical thinking in deciding what to plant and how to care for it.  In fact, studies show that with the physical aspect of gardening and the critical thinking skills involved in planning it, you may lessen your chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

Another often overlooked benefit of gardening is the social aspect. While working in your garden may be a solitary activity, gardeners enjoy getting together in the forms of clubs, visiting their local farmers market, nursery trips, or joining a community garden project.

MorningStar of Boise offers stylish independent living and assisted living suites in a variety of floor plans. To ensure the comfort and wellbeing of residents, we offer resort-style amenities and services with beautiful common areas including a fitness room, salon, billiards and game room, restaurant-style dining, strolling paths and raised garden beds. Learn More About Father’s Day

Father’s Day was first officially celebrated in the United States on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. It then took another 58 years (in 1972) after President Woodrow Wilson had declared Mother’s Day to be an official holiday for dads to get their own official national holiday. This year Father’s Day is June 18, as the holiday is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month.

The earliest public event honoring fathers was in 1908 at a West Virginia church. It was held in memory of 362 area men who had been killed in a tragic coal mine accident the year before. It was a one-time commemoration and not intended to be an annual holiday.

The first recognized celebration of all fathers took place at the Spokane, WA YMCA on June 19, 1910. It was organized by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, William Jackson Smart was a single parent who raised six children. Ms. Dodd had heard a sermon about the Mother’s Day celebration at Central Methodist Episcopal Church a year earlier and encouraged her church to have a similar event honoring fathers. She had wanted it to be on her father’s birthday, June 5th, but her church’s pastors needed more time to prepare sermons so it was held on the third Sunday of the month.

Our fathers hold a special place in our hearts and certainly deserve to have their “own day;” however getting fathers nationally recognized was not as easy as it had been to get a designated national holiday for mothers. Throughout the years there were efforts to make it a national holiday but it never moved forward. It wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson issued a presidential proclamation honoring fathers, and designated the third Sunday as Father’s Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the holiday into law.

For exceptional independent and assisted living, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Hayward. We offer luxury senior living for the area’s beloved “mothers” and “fathers.” Our beautiful community is designed to meet residents’ every need. Cataracts Are the Main Cause of Vision Loss in People Over 40

Cataracts are cloudy areas that form in the lens, which is normally transparent, and are the main cause of vision loss in people over 40 years of age. It is estimated more than 40 percent of Americans aged 75 years or older have some degree of lens clouding; and over half of people 80 or older have their vision significantly impaired by cataracts or have had cataract surgery. Surgery is generally recommended once vision is impaired to a degree that people have trouble reading, driving and recognizing faces. Today the surgery is a quick, safe procedure, replacing the cloudy lens with a clear plastic one.

Doctors say there are things people can do to reduce their risk of developing cataracts with quitting smoking at the top of that list. Medical News Today reports on studies linking a 3-fold increase of smoking to cataracts as well as raising the risk of several other eye conditions. A healthy diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, good quality fats (avocados, olive oil, and omega oils) and lean animal-sourced or plant-sourced proteins additionally reduces the risk of cataracts.

Maintaining a healthy weight is important as obesity increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, which is a risk factor for cataracts. Other ways to reduce your risk include wearing UV blocking sunglasses when in the sunlight and getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night. The risk for cataracts also increases with age, family history, and a history of eye inflammation or injury.

If you are not ready for surgery yet, doctors say stronger glasses and brighter lights may help. Keep up with regular eye exams and renew your eyeglass prescription as needed. Wear sunglasses in the sun and avoid night driving. As your cataracts continue to develop and eyesight worsens, at some point you will most likely need surgery.

What Did You Have for Breakfast Today?

How many times have you eaten breakfast, and after an hour or two, you start to feel hungry? Many breakfast options involve foods such as cereals, breads and granola bars that are high in refined grains and sugar. To solve the problem, nutritionists say you should add protein to every meal including your breakfast.

When you eat a breakfast with protein, you feel fuller and more satisfied for a longer period of time and less apt to reach for high-calorie snacks mid-day. Registered dietician, Lisa Jones, explains an adult’s daily intake of protein should be between 10% and 35% of the calories consumed. She adds, “For example, if your nutritional needs call for 2,000 calories daily, you should get 200 to 700 calories from protein, or 50 to 175 grams.”

One suggestion for an easy-to-do, protein-rich breakfast is avocado and fried egg on a bagel or enriched whole-grain slice of toast. Omelets are also fairly easy and can be assembled with a variety of fillings such as mushrooms, spinach and bacon. You can increase the protein in a bowl of oatmeal by adding a scoop of protein powder and topping it with almond milk and berries. Try other creative options such as smoked salmon on a toasted whole wheat English muffin spread with cream cheese, or a Greek yogurt parfait layered with granola, nuts, and fruit. Another incentive for eating protein in the morning is nutritionists say it can help you lose weight as you feel more satisfied for a longer period of time.

Help Keep Your Senior Loved One Healthy With Thoughtful Gifts

We all want our loved ones to lead long, healthy lives so why not encourage them when birthdays and holidays come around. One suggestion is to buy a loved one a fitness watch. The marketplace has a wide assortment of watches as well as sensor devices to measure your daily footsteps and help keep you moving. Moreover, they come in many price points and offer a variety of features.

Research shows measuring your daily activity improves your fitness level and can help people with obesity, diabetes, and heart disease boost physical activity levels. JAMA Network Open published a finding which reviewed 38 randomized clinical trials with 4,203 participants. They stated that “interventions with wearable fitness trackers were associated with significantly increased physical activity levels after approximately 15 weeks. Devices such as pedometers or trackers that count steps were associated with greater levels of physical activity in about 70 percent of the studies examined.”

Another healthy gift idea is a massage gun. Known as a self-myofascial release tool or SMR, they help overworked muscles recover and heal. Foam rollers additionally provide much of the same benefit at a much lower price point. However, experts caution before treating an injury or other medical problems including bone fractures, blood clotting issues, sensory deficits or wounds you need to consult with a physician or licensed physical therapist.

Other healthy gift ideas include an electric kettle with a selection of antioxidants teas. As we know sleep is important to our overall well being, how about a sound machine to help your loved one get a more restful night’s sleep? Nutritionists suggest an air fryer is a good gift as it can cook almost anything quicker and easier and uses a lot less fat.

MorningStar of Mission Viejo offers a broad range of amenities and services to promote a healthy lifestyle. Our fitness center, swimming pool and exercise classes make it easy to keep moving. In addition, residents enjoy healthy, delicious chef designed meals that are largely prepared from scratch with the freshest ingredients, locally sourced when possible. Studies Show Flavonoids in Foods May Help Forgetfulness

Research shows flavonoids, the chemicals that provide plant foods their bright colors, may help in the fight against forgetfulness and mild confusion many seniors experience. The evidence comes from two long-term continuing health studies from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Participants were periodically surveyed regarding their diet and state of their health including memory problems over a 20-year period. Data was extracted from over 100,000 men and women with an average age of 73.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Deborah Blacker, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said they focused on participants’ consummation of two dozen common types of flavonoids. These included carrots (high in beta carotene), strawberries (containing flavone) and apples (containing anthocyanin). Results suggest those who answered “yes” to having memory problems also reported eating a lower number of flavonoid-enriched foods.

Researchers found a significant difference between the bottom one-fifth of participants who reported the lowest intake of flavonoids compared to the upper one-fifth who were 19 percent less likely to report forgetfulness or confusion. Additionally, the study reported “higher intakes of Brussel sprouts, strawberries, winter squash and raw spinach were most highly associated with better scores on the test of subjective cognitive decline.” Dr. Thomas M. Holland, a researcher at the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging who was not involved in the study, said “There’s some really good data here with 20 years of follow-up.”

What if Your Loved One With Dementia Doesn’t Recognize You?

Apart from having to watch a loved one go through the devastating stages of Alzheimer’s or another dementia disease, the next saddest thing may be when the person stops recognizing you.   This can bring up all sorts of feelings, of which some while not fair, are there nonetheless.  When we take time to visit a family member (in person or via video call) in a memory care community and they don’t even know who we are, some people wonder why they are making the effort.

However, a long-term caregiver reminds us how we can be certain the person is not reacting to our presence in some way?  Maybe the sound of our voice, or the touch of our hand?   In the same way people in comas have said they heard the voices of loved ones even when they were unable to communicate, perhaps a person in the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease knows we are there for them on some level.  At the very least, in whatever way they can understand, we want them to know they are loved and valued.

Experts suggest a way to help make yourself more recognizable to your parents or spouse.  If you are an adult child, try putting together a photo timeline of you as a small child, an adolescent, a young adult to a current picture.  Spouses can do the same starting with a picture from their early days as a couple to the present.

For anyone having difficulty being around a loved one with Alzheimer’s, it may be helpful to learn all you can about the disease so you understand what is going on.  It will also teach you better ways to communicate with the person more effectively.

At MorningStar of Hayward, our goal is to offer the best senior living in the area, which includes compassionate and loving care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our approach is holistic and encompasses every aspect of the disease as well as individualized care.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional memory care, assisted living or independent living in Hayward, CA.

In some cases, a move to an assisted living community is precipitated by a worsening medical condition or an injury due to a fall and the time to mentally prepare oneself is short. This is why MorningStar of Mission Viejo has a guide to help families navigate through such a momentous change in a senior’s life.

Googling senior living in Mission Viejo will bring up quite a few hits so experts recommend narrowing down the candidates to 3 or 4 communities that offer assisted living in a location that works for your family.  Reading information on their website and contacting them for pricing information can help narrow down the choices to those you wish to tour.

Touring a community is a real eye-opener and the Internet offers many tips on what to look for during your visit. At MorningStar, our online community assistant allows you to inquire about pricing and availability as well as set up a tour. We recommend setting aside a couple of hours for a tour and getting ready for a lot of details. Take notes and bring any questions you would like to ask. Focus on the overall ambiance, and take a look at our Monthly Expense Comparison and Senior Communities Comparison Chart beforehand to weigh value against cost. We also advise revisiting your top one or two choices, and remember many seniors find a trial stay; we offer them for up to a full month, is a good way to find out if it is the right community.

Animal Therapy Benefits Those with Dementia

Pet therapy (also known as animal-assisted therapy) is used for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia to alleviate feelings of boredom, loneliness and helplessness. Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard trained geriatrician and author of “The Eden Alternative,” said bringing in children, plants and animals helps to invigorate long-term care by “incorporating companionship, a sense of purpose, variety and spontaneity into the day-to-day experience of aged care residents.”

While studies show therapy dogs and other animals are useful in stimulating social interaction and easing agitation in dementia patients, experts say it should be done with specially trained pets to get the most benefit. Moreover, the animal should be matched to the setting as well as to the person. Pet therapists say dogs are generally the easiest to train as they are comfortable interacting with a variety of people.

The benefits of animal therapy to dementia patients include the unconditional love and acceptance animals freely give out as well as the physical touch from the pet contact. Also, these relationships do not require much in the way of communication skills, which are often difficult for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers say other benefits of pet therapy include an increase in physical activity and an unexpected improvement in a person’s appetite after a visit from an animal as well as an overall calming effect.

What Are the Health Benefits of Daily Walks for Seniors?

As an aging adult, it’s important to get plenty of physical activity each day. However, this can feel intimidating if you have joint and mobility problems. Walking is the best solution to this problem.

When you take daily walks in senior living, you effectively exercise your heart, legs, and core. Here are some of the positives of daily walks in senior living.

Better Heart Health

Cardiovascular health is a common concern among seniors. As you get older, your heart health largely depends on your lifestyle habits.

Regular cardiovascular exercise improves your heart health and prevents future heart problems.

Most people think of cardio in its most intense forms: running, climbing stairs, and dancing. However, walking is one of the best forms of cardio for seniors. It’s easy on your joints and doesn’t strain your muscles too much.

If you want to protect your heart from age-related problems, make sure you get outside for your daily walk.

Positive Moods

Outdoor walks can do wonders to increase feelings of happiness, optimism, and self-esteem in seniors. According to Harvard, the sun stimulates the production of certain brain chemicals that lead to positive moods. In addition, fresh air contains healthy bacteria that have a mood-boosting effect on your brain.

Even walking indoors for ten minutes at a time can be helpful for your mental health. The National Institutes of Health confirms that any form of movement can protect against depression, anxiety, and hopelessness in seniors.

Social Connection

Fostering a healthy social life is one of the best things you can do for yourself in senior living. Older adults who have strong social bonds show better health outcomes physically and mentally.

Daily walks are the perfect opportunities for social connection. You can invite your friends along with you or walk to meet them at your favorite spot outside. Some retirement communities even organize daily group walks.

Next time you’re chatting with a friend, invite them to join you on your daily walk. Your health will thank you later.

Increased Mobility

Movement is key to maintaining mobility and flexibility. As you age, your joints and other tissues can become stiff and painful. Daily walking improves your range of motion by keeping your connective tissues active and stretched.

As a senior, mobility is one of the most important aspects of your health. Losing mobility means losing some of your independence, so it’s important to take time for daily walks.

You can maintain control over your body while also getting some fresh air and friendly conversation.

Protect Your Health with Daily Walks In Senior Living

Residents of retirement communities should prioritize daily walks to improve their health. The research is right; walking is an effective way to boost your mental and physical health. Make some time each day to get outdoors and get your blood pumping.

Nurturing Your Well-Being: 5 Self-Care Ideas for Older Adults in Senior Living

Caring for yourself goes beyond your medical and physical needs. Sometimes, you just need a “you” day. That’s what self-care is for!

Self-care is important in senior living. Aging adults deserve time to rest, relax, and enjoy the world around them. Here are some ideas for self-care in senior living communities.

1. Go on a Solo Outdoor Walk

Connecting socially is important in senior living, but alone time can be just as rejuvenating. Make time to walk outside to reconnect with nature and yourself.

Walking is a great way to boost your mood and improve your physical health. Daily walks strengthen your cardiovascular system, promote happiness, and reduce anxiety.

Next time you need some “me” time, go for a solo walk and see all that nature has to offer.

2. Bake Your Favorite Dessert

Everyone has a sweet tooth once in a while. For your next act of self-care, spend some time baking your favorite treats.

Baking is a good way to reduce stress and take your mind off of anything that might be bothering you. It requires focus, measurements, and patience. In the end, you get to eat something delicious, too!

3. Have a Movie Night

Movie nights aren’t just for couples and friend groups. If you’re craving some solo time but don’t know what to do, a movie night could be just what you need.

You can stream almost any movie or TV show these days. If that’s not an option for you, you can rent most movies through online services. For just a few bucks, you get an entire night of entertainment.

4. Take a Nap

This one might sound simple, but naps can do wonders for your mind and body. If you feel exhausted and drained, a nap is calling your name.

Sometimes the best act of self-care is to simply rest. Your body and brain get to heal and refresh while you sleep. When you wake up, you’ll feel more relaxed and ready to take on the rest of your day.

5. Read an Interesting Book

Whether you’re into self-help books or romance novels, reading can be an effective tool for reducing stress and caring for your well-being. Books keep your mind sharp and improve memory and concentration.
Pick out a book at your local library, bookstore, or senior living recreation center and curl up for as long as you need. You might be surprised how rested you feel afterward.

Keep Up with Your Needs: Self-Care in Senior Living

In senior living, there are plenty of social opportunities and hobbies. It’s important to take some time for yourself now and then. Follow this guide to create a relaxing self-care day and keep up with your mental health.

How to Improve Communication with Loved Ones Affected by Memory Loss

Memory problems affect the whole family, and they can be troubling for the loved ones of seniors in memory care. Fortunately, there are ways to rebuild your connection with your loved one.

Memory care encourages cognitive skill-building and protects your loved one from further mental decline. Follow this guide to improve your communication with your loved one — no matter their memory capabilities.

Speak Clearly at a Slow Pace

While you should avoid patronizing or treating your loved one like a child, speaking at a slower pace than normal is best. This will help them process your words without getting upset and frustrated.

Make sure you speak clearly, pronouncing your words with care. Your loved one in memory care may have trouble understanding speech, so it’s best to be as thorough as possible.

Additionally, speaking at a fast pace can lead to overstimulation for your loved one. They may not be able to process lots of sounds, inflections, and tones of voice at one time.

Use Gentle Touch to Show Affection and Love

You might feel frustrated trying to find ways to display your love and affection for your loved one with memory problems. Touch is powerful and can break through the barriers of cognitive problems.

A Note About Consent

Always make sure that your loved one consents to being touched, even if you’re a close family member. They may not want physical affection at every opportunity, and that’s okay. Pushing their boundaries will only make things harder for them.

Avoid Surprise Touches

Remember not to sneak up on your loved one or surprise them in any way. Let them know that you’re approaching them and tell them exactly what you plan to do. For example, you can say, “Mom, I’m going to give you a hug now. I love you.”

Avoid Arguing with Your Loved One

If you have a loved one in memory care, you shouldn’t debate over facts and logic. Instead, validate their feelings, even if their thoughts aren’t rational or fact-based.

Arguments don’t help your loved one “see the truth” or get on your side. In fact, getting into heated conversations may push them farther away from you emotionally. They can’t process information the same way they used to, so it’s important to be empathetic and understanding.

In order to enjoy your time together, focus on emotional connections. It’s okay to validate scary, frustrating, and illogical thoughts and feelings.

For example, if your loved one is convinced that they didn’t do something that they really did, you can say, “That must feel frustrating. I’m here for you.”

Support Your Loved One in Memory Care with Good Communication Techniques

Feeling confused and forgetful can be a frightening and lonely experience for seniors. Use these communication tips to build a closer bond with your loved one in memory care.

4 Tips for Discussing Assisted Living Options with an Aging Family Member

Assisted living is an excellent option for seniors who need extra help with daily tasks. However, many aging adults are resistant to the idea. You can use the following tips to have respectful, productive conversations about assisted living with the aging adult in your life.

1. Validate Their Feelings

Your loved one will likely feel some strong emotions during your discussions. It’s important not to dismiss, ignore, or belittle these feelings. Use validating phrases like, “I hear you. It’s scary to think about moving into a new place” or, “It’s understandable that you feel angry and abandoned. I’m here for you.”

Acknowledging your loved one’s emotions shows them that you’re a safe person to talk to. They’ll feel less alone and more empowered once they process their feelings.

2. Give Them Choices

Your aging loved one is likely still capable of caring for themselves on a basic level if they’re going into assisted living. They should be able to make choices that work best for them.

While you may have to be firm about some aspects of the move, you can allow your loved one to voice their opinions about each option. Afford them some degree of personal autonomy so they don’t feel weak, helpless, and isolated as they prepare for the transition.

3. Focus On How Assisted Living Can Help Them

While you should make it a point to validate your aging loved one’s feelings, it’s also important for them to know the facts. Their abilities and limitations might be a source of shame for them, so use kind, empathetic wording as you seek to inform them.

You might bring up events that indicate that assisted living is the best option for them. For example, if they frequently have trouble getting themselves dressed in the morning, it could be a sign that they need a little help.

Make sure to offer your loved one reassurance every step of the way. Their limitations aren’t their fault, and they deserve a safe, comfortable place to call home.

4. Take Time to Cool Off Before Arguments Happen

If you sense that an argument is imminent, it may be best to take a step back from the conversation. Fighting will only reinforce the idea that your loved one is no longer in control of their life. Resist the urge to become embattled in logical arguments, even if you believe you’re right.

You should continue validating your loved one’s feelings if they express anger, disappointment, or resentment over your decision. It’s crucial for them to know that they’re loved and cared for during this difficult and uncertain time.

Communication Is Key: Talk About Assisted Living Before the Move

Don’t wait until it’s time for your loved one to move — have these tough conversations now so that they feel prepared. Assisted living is a wonderful resource for seniors who need extra help, and your loved one will come to see that for themselves with time.

Senior Independent Living Communities Offer Many Benefits

Did you know more and more older adults are making the choice to move into senior living communities? Seniors are embracing the idea of giving up home maintenance and spending more time doing what they love best, including being able to travel without worrying about snow piling up or the lawn needing to be mowed. Independent living communities offer private apartments designed to meet residents’ needs along with common areas ideal for sitting and relaxing with friends and dining rooms offering delicious restaurant-style meals.

Another reason many seniors are choosingindependent living communitiesis the appeal of living among like-minded people of the same age. Socializing is important to our wellbeing and isolation can lead to depression or worsen health problems. For seniors who no longer work and/or have stopped or limited their driving, it can get more and more difficult to maintain normal social interactions. Senior living communities offer easy opportunities for residents to meet new friends or engage in social activities and special events.

At senior living communities such as MorningStar of Boise, we offer transportation services and take to the road every so often for trips to local parks, shopping malls, museums and other spots of interest. We also bring in live entertainment and host special events throughout the year. Wellness activities include exercise classes, life enrichment classes and more. We also know security is important to peace of mind, and community living gives that to seniors and their families.

Furthermore, while our operating license does not permit us to extend care to those in ourindependent living neighborhood, we can arrange for home health agencies to serve you if the need arises. In addition, you will get priority placement to transfer to an assisted living suite, depending on availability. For trusted independent or assisted living Boise seniors and their families can count on, please contact us for more information.

4 Reasons Seniors Choose to Move to Assisted Living Communities

Assisted living is designed to help seniors maintain their independence and still get extra help with daily tasks. You can expect personalized assistance every day.

Many seniors choose these communities for themselves as they notice their daily functioning decreasing. There are many benefits to moving into assisted living. Here’s why seniors are opting for assisted living to improve their lives.

1. They Can’t Care for Their Homes Anymore

You take pride in your living space, and it’s understandable to want to stay in it as long as possible. However, some aging adults just can’t maintain their spaces anymore.
Keeping up with the housework, chores, and everyday tasks in any home is draining for many seniors. You might not have the energy you once did, or maybe your mobility is declining.

No matter your reasons, moving to a place where you can get specialized help with all of these tasks is valid. If you can no longer maintain your home on a basic level, it might be time to consider assisted living

2. They Want a Social Community

Seniors everywhere benefit from strong social connections with other people. In assisted living communities, socialization is a perk of everyday life. You get to participate in fun activities and enriching classes that connect you with peers around your age.

It can be difficult to maintain your social life if you live alone as a senior. Assisted living communities always have social opportunities for residents, making them the best places to stay connected to others while having fun.

3. They Need Help but Want Independence

Some seniors mistakenly believe accepting help takes away their autonomy and life choices. However, assisted living has the opposite purpose: it’s designed to keep you independent while assisting you with tasks of daily living.

In assisted living communities, professional caregivers help you maintain a clean, safe living space and care for yourself daily. The rest of your life is up to you — and there’s plenty to do outside your home!

4. They Need More Activities and Hobbies

Assisted living communities are known for creative events, social gatherings, and fun classes that residents can attend together. A welcoming senior community might be right for you if you’re looking for new hobbies after retirement.

Each community is different, but most offer sports, dining, entertainment, and academic advancement. You can enrich your life while getting the medical, physical, and social support you need.

Assisted Living: Take the Next Step Toward Independence

Moving to an assisted living community might be the best decision you make in your senior years. There are plenty of perks to enjoy, and someone will always be around to help you with challenging daily tasks. What’s not to love?
