Assisted Living at MorningStar of Boise
As a vibrant 55+ community, MorningStar of Boise has stylish apartments offering seniors a choice of independent living or assisted living. Our independent living is designed for active seniors who love the idea of someone else handling the maintenance and housekeeping giving them more time to socialize, travel and pursue their hobbies and interests.
Assisted living is for seniors who require help with the activities of daily living (ADLs) to improve their quality of life. As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.
Many residents report being surprised by how full their lives are after a move into an assisted living community. Moreover, rather than lose their independence as many fear such a move would do, most are pleased to discover once they get the daily care they need, they are more ready than ever to lead productive lives.
Community life solves the problem of loneliness as well as problems with meal prep many elderly adults experience, often resorting to frozen meals or fast food. MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. No longer driving? No worries as we offer scheduled transportation to area shopping as well as trips to the doctors and running errands.
We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Moreover, if we do not have a program or activities that attract your interest or offer a hobby you would love to explore, we encourage you to start a club.
MorningStar is in the northwest side of town near several highly rated medical facilities and close to shopping, restaurants and other services. Please contact us for more information about our luxury retirement home in Boise and be sure to ask us about our Move-in Specials. We look forward to hearing from you.
MorningStar’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the finest retirement home Boise has to offer. Advance Care Planning Gives You a Voice in Your Future Medical Decisions
An advanced directive is a legal document giving you a voice involving medical decisions in the event you are incapacitated. Many people shy away from creating such documents as they fail to realize how important they are, and mistakenly worry they are signing away their lives, and/or don’t like thinking about being so ill they are unable to make decisions.
Advance care planning documents may include a living will, power of attorney and health care proxy. By planning ahead, they guide decisions made on your behalf if you are unable, and suffer from an incurable, irreversible illness, condition or disease determined to be terminal. Living wills specify the kind of medical treatment desired and many simply express the desire to not be given life-sustaining measures that only serve to prolong a person’s death. Specific details may regard care including the use of pain medications, antibiotics, hydration, feeding and the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation or ventilators.
A health care proxy is someone designated to express your wishes for medical care and has the same rights you would in requesting or refusing treatment. A durable power of attorney document names a person to act on your behalf if you are incapacitated and gives them the power to make financial decisions.
The Harvard Medical School reports on some of the myths people have regarding advance care directives. They say you need to realize more care is not always better but can prolong the dying process without respect for quality of life or comfort. Refusing life support does not mean you are committing suicide but rather allowing your medical problem to be the cause of your death. Moreover, refusing life-extending treatment does not mean you are refusing comfort measures for pain management and symptoms. Talk to your family and doctor about your medical preferences, and be sure each has a copy of your advance directive documents.

Ways to Improve Dexterity for Seniors
As we age, it is very common to lose strength, flexibility, and range of motion in various parts of the body. This can be a particularly difficult struggle when it comes to losing dexterity in your hands. However, as a senior living in Lakewood, there are many different ways you can improve the dexterity of your hands. In this article, we will be covering some easy exercises and activities to try so you can help keep your hands and fingers strong as you age.
Mold with Clay
Clay, dough, and putty are all very fun creative and sensory tools that can also be used to help you strengthen your dexterity. If you are using brand new clay, be sure to start out with very small pieces, as new clay can take a little while to soften enough to work with easily. However, when it comes to dough and putty, you can pretty much work with them as soon as you get them. The squeezing and molding movements you will do while handling these mediums can do wonderful things for your manual dexterity as a senior.
Play an Instrument
Playing an instrument is another great way to make sure you are keeping the dexterity in your hands. It can be helpful to play an instrument you know for this purpose, or you can even try learning a new instrument. This can help you not only work out your hands, but also your brain/mental dexterity! In addition to this, music can be a particularly valuable tool for seniors who are in memory care in Lakewood.
Practice Your Penmanship
Handwriting is something that can be a really great workout for your hands’ dexterity. However, rather than just writing as you normally would, try writing in a different way and/or using your non-dominant hand. For example, try writing your name a few times by holding your pencil with just your fingers and not your thumb on both hands. You can also practice different styles of writing, or handwritten “fonts.” You can also just try drawing or doodling in these ways to help strengthen your hand dexterity.
Try Origami
Simple origami pieces can also be a wonderful way to work on your hands’ dexterity. Folding paper and making sure to follow a specific design is also a great way to work on your mental and manual dexterity. However, you do not have to start with the most complicated forms of origami. Start simple, and work your way up as you get better and better! Think of it more as an exercise to improve your life, rather than an activity or skill you have to do perfectly.

Reasons Seniors Should Always Wear Sunscreen
With summer in full swing, it has never been more important for seniors to make sure they are protecting themselves from the heat and harmful UV rays of the sun. Of course there are ways to stay in the shade, and wear clothing that covers your skin. However, these tricks can only do so much when it comes to protecting yourself as a senior living in Lakewood. In this blog, we will be discussing why you should always wear sunscreen if you are going to be spending time outdoors this summer.
Our Skin Thins as We Age
As we get older, the fatty layers underneath the surface of our skin starts to thin out. In addition to this, it can also become harder for your body to hold onto water. This means your skin can become thinner and drier than it used to be. When this happens, the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate more deeply into your skin, and impact your health in much bigger ways. However, by being proactive and wearing sunscreen every time you are going to be exposed to the sun, you can help mitigate this issue. Even if you wear a lot of shade and coverings, it can still be a good idea to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin; such as your hands, face, chest/neck, feet, etc. This can help you prevent issues like sunburn, heat rash, and even skin cancer—which we will be discussing below.
Reduce Your Risk of Skin Cancer
Unfortunately, skin cancer is a condition that can happen as a result of cumulative sun exposure over the course of our whole life. When we get problems like sunburn, it can actually damage our skin on a cellular level—even breaking down the DNA of our skin. This problem can be exacerbated by age, since skin starts to get thinner and thinner, and other systems of our body may slow down as well. Our ability to heal and fight infections diminishes as we age. This is why it is so very important to be proactive as much as possible the older we get. If you are a senior in memory care in Lakewood, make sure you and your loved ones always have a broad spectrum 30 SPF sunscreen on hand at all times for when you are going to be outside.
Some Medications can Make You More Sun-Sensitive
Many seniors have to take specific medications for a myriad of issues. However, many seniors do not realize that some medications can make them even more sensitive and susceptible to sun damage. Always discuss all possible side effects with your primary care physician, so you can be proactive about your health and overall well-being.

The Transition to an Assisted Living Community
No matter how old we are, change can be difficult and the bigger the change, the more challenging. For the elderly, change can signal an end to a way of life they are most familiar with and cause a range of emotions from mourning a loss of independence to feelings of helplessness. Hopefully it also offers a spark of excitement at starting a new adventure.
If you are an adult child of a senior who is in the process of transitioning into assisted living, experts offer tips to get through any rough patches. To make the move more successful, they recommended working as a team: the senior, the family, the new home and their doctor. As family members, it is important to recognize how intimidating the move can be in the eyes of your loved one as they are moving to a new environment with all new people. Experts say the adjustment period typically lasts for 30 to 90 days.
A senior can make it easier on themselves by keeping an open mind and realizing it will take a little while to adjust. Try to get out and enjoy your new environment rather than staying behind closed doors in your suite. If you are unsure how something works, ask questions. If you are having problems getting answers, talk to the management or ask your family to intervene.
Families can help the senior to set up their new apartment with familiar items and family memories including pictures and other favorite knick-knacks. Once they are settled, experts say don’t desert them but don’t overdo the visits. Allow them to find their own way and perhaps start making a few friends. If the community has family-friendly activities, join in when you can.

Health Benefits of Almonds for Seniors
Most of the time, if you do some research about “healthy foods,” you will see many articles and books that state nuts are a great food to add to your diet. However, there may not be much information about what specific nuts you should be eating. In this post, we will be discussing the health benefits of almonds for seniors. So, if you are a senior living in Lakewood, keep reading for some valuable information about these amazing, nutritious nuts.
Controlling Blood Sugar
Almonds are a fantastic source of magnesium, which is a vital nutrient the body needs in order to balance and control blood sugar. It has also been found to help reduce insulin resistance, which can help some seniors possibly avoid the development of type 2 diabetes. Just two ounces of almonds can give you all the magnesium your body needs to help maintain control of your blood sugar. They are also a wonderful topping for carb-heavy foods like cereal. This is because they help slow carbohydrate absorption, and give you more slowly released energy throughout the day. Of course, almond consumption can not guarantee perfect blood sugar levels, but they are a great addition to a healthy lifestyle.
Balancing Blood Pressure
In addition to helping maintain blood sugar, the magnesium content of almonds can also help keep your blood pressure balanced. Kidney failure, heart attacks, and strokes are all conditions that can happen if your blood pressure is not properly maintained. High blood pressure can be a significant problem for seniors in memory care in Lakewood who are magnesium deficient. By using almonds to help keep up with your magnesium intake, you may be able to help reduce your risk of developing high blood pressure—also known as hypertension. Again, eating almonds can not guarantee flawless blood pressure; but with the support of a licensed nutritionist, you can use almonds as a tool to help you stay healthy as an elderly adult.
Lowering Cholesterol
While cholesterol is not always a negative thing, it is important to always keep your bad cholesterol in check. A great way to do this is to incorporate more almonds into your diet. “Bad” cholesterol is medically called “low-density lipoproteins,” or LDLs. So if you are a senior with high levels of LDLs, it is vital to get those numbers down as quickly as possible. You can accomplish this by developing an action plan with your primary care doctor, as well as a licensed nutritionist. Chances are, almonds are going to become a common tool used to help you keep your cholesterol under control; in addition to a healthy lifestyle.

Pets Improve Health and Offer Unconditional Love
Research has shown that having a pet can improve our mental health, cardiovascular health and PTSD symptoms. In fact, even if you do not own a pet but just spend some time interacting with animals, it can lift your spirits and decrease stress. Also, during hard times, many of us feel our pets are more important than ever.
The great thing about pets is they offer unconditional love and loyal companionship. Caring for an animal can be a welcome distraction from life’s other worries and can provide more meaning to our life. Moreover, how can you feel upset or angry when sitting with a cat on your lap and hearing the relaxing, melodious sound of their purr? Research has shown that an act as simple as petting a dog or cat has been shown to reduce stress and help regulate our mood.
Many people believe their pet has the ability to pick up on their emotions and know when they are sad or stressed and need a little “extra love.” In addition, dogs need exercise so many dog owners are motivated to get outside and exercise, which is always a good thing. However, experts caution that before you rush out and adopt an animal , think about how much time you have to care for one, and do you have the money to pay for the extra expenses. Also, if your choice is a dog, are you physically able to provide the animal with the daily exercise they need?
At MorningStar Senior Living of Hayward, we understand how important our residents’ furry friends are to them, which is why we are pet friendly. Actively Participating in Your Medical Care May Reduce Medical Errors
Experts suggest that a good way to reduce medical errors regarding your care or that of a loved one is to be an active partner in the process whether in a hospital setting, doctors’ office or the pharmacy. The World Health Organization reports “an estimated 10% of patients in high-income countries are harmed while receiving hospital care.” Also, according to a 2021 report in StatPearls, “medical errors result in about 100,000 deaths in hospitals and clinics annually.”
Furthermore, studies show the most harmful errors in primary and outpatient health care settings are related to diagnoses, prescriptions and use of medicines. Mistakes associated with misdiagnosis resulted in delayed treatment for the real problem and having the wrong drugs prescribed.
However, it is important to keep in mind that some medical errors are a result of patients failing to disclose all of the medications they take including prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Another problem is the failure to reveal pertinent details regarding a person’s prior medical history as well as lifestyle habits such as smoking, diet and alcohol consumption.
Medical professionals say to remember the time spent with your doctor is short, so to help prevent errors with care, come prepared to your appointment by putting in writing critical points you wish to discuss. The Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute Center for Diagnostic Excellence at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore has a QuestionBuilder app available by AHRQ at Google Play or the Apple App store to help you focus on the questions you need to ask during your appointment.
Other things to do before the appointment include putting together a list of medications you take, the dosage, and why you take it. If you worry about forgetting something you were told during the visit, take along a family member or trusted friend. Also ask questions and seek a second opinion if it would make you more comfortable. Most importantly if a medical problem is not getting better, remain persistent in addressing it with your medical team.

The Move into a Senior Living Community
If you are moving from your own home into an independent or assisted living community, most likely you will want to downsize. While it can sound overwhelming to go through a whole household of stuff and whittle it down to fit into a modest sized apartment, a few tips will help.
Without question it is a lot of work and can be stressful and emotional but the Internet offers lots of useful information from organizing experts. Most say the trick is to prepare in advance by making a plan and allowing plenty of time. Remember, if you are interested, there are companies who offer these services and will do everything from helping with the downsizing process to packing up, and moving your things to your new home.
Now you are ready for the sorting out process deciding what you will bring and what to give to family, donate, or throw away. This is the hardest task as your house is full of memories but again here is where a system works. Experts say sort by rooms and simplify the task by making a “yes” pile and a “no” pile. They warn not to make a “maybe” pile as it can end up growing in size and complicate your plan. Again, remember the goal is to simplify your life and not overcrowd the new place with useless stuff.
Things to consider are the size of your new place and its layout (get measurements). You will want furniture scaled to fit as well as room for hobbies or musical instruments that are important to you. Also consider the amenities your new place offers such as a dining service. If most of your meals will be prepared by your new community, you will just need the basics in your kitchen. If the new place has a fitness center, there is no need to bring your own equipment.
MorningStar of Mission Viejo is a 55+ independent and assisted living community that offers a vibrant, active lifestyle. Best Natural Sugar Substitutes for Seniors
Bleached, and “refined” sugar is something most of us could benefit from consuming less of. However, it is part of many different recipes and foods we all enjoy. For any senior living in Lakewood, sugar substitutes can provide some of the flavors you want, but they can also often be just as bad or even worse for your health. So below, we will be discussing some of the best natural sugar substitutes that are free of GMOs and artificial ingredients. (Of course, if you are a diabetic senior, these sugars may not be safe/healthy for you. Always consult with your primary care physician before making any dietary or lifestyle changes that could impact your health.)
Agave Syrup
Agave syrup is made from the agave plant, and in my opinion, it is the closest in flavor to raw cane sugar. However, agave has a sweeter taste than sugar, and is not made into granules. While this natural sugar substitute may not be a good option for diabetics, it can be a great, long-lasting alternative to processed sugar. You can use less of it in your recipes, since it is sweeter; and you do not have to worry about harmful or artificial additives. Just be sure to check the ingredients, and confirm it is only agave syrup.
Coconut Sugar
Coconut sugar is generally processed very little, and can be a great alternative for white table sugar. The fact that it is usually unprocessed also means that it still has all the vitamins and minerals of coconuts! This means you can actually get a little bit of micronutrients by using this type of sugar in small amounts. Of course, any sugar should be consumed in moderation, but it can be nice to know that you are getting a little bit of good with your “bad.” Of course, coconut sugar should not be eaten by the spoonful, but as an alternative to sugar, it can be a wonderful choice.
Date Paste
Speaking of healthier natural sugar alternatives, date paste is the sugar substitute that you will wish you knew about sooner! Due to the natural high sugar content of dates, they can actually be used to make a deliciously sweet paste that can be used in place of sugar for just about anything. Dates are also a fantastic source of many nutrients such as fiber, potassium, calcium, vitamin B6, copper, and more! So, by utilizing more date paste over bleached and processed sugar, you can make your sweets just a little more healthy than they would have been. Again, remember to be sparing and moderate with your sugar intake—no matter what kind of sugar you use!
Our mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living Lakewood has to offer. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, MorningStar at Applewood provides outstanding assisted living and memory care in Lakewood.
Aromatherapy for Seniors
Aromatherapy is a wonderful way to set a mood, and create a specific atmosphere without the use of flame candles. Flame candles can also be great, but if you are looking for a way to avoid the hazards of open flames in your home or senior living community, essential oil diffusers and wax melts can be the perfect option. Certain scents are known for offering general feelings of peace, focus, happiness, and more. For example, lavender is very commonly used in aromatherapy for sleep, stress relief, and other calming blends. If you are a senior living in Lakewood, keep reading for more information on aromatherapy for seniors.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils have been used for their beneficial effects for centuries, and many people find great results by incorporating them into their daily wellness routine. However, if you are not familiar with what essential oils are, here is a quick definition:
Essential oils are concentrated oils that naturally occur in all plants. They are usually extracted through a steam distillation or cold press process, and should only be used if they are completely organic. Many brands of essential oils exist today, so it is vital to do proper research before purchasing.
In addition to researching brands, it is also very important to speak with your primary care physician before incorporating essential oils into your wellness routine. Some people have allergies to certain plants, and some medications can interact negatively with them as well. Make sure you get a second opinion from a licensed holistic physician as well, so you are able to get all the benefits you possibly can.
How Can Aromatherapy Help?
Aromatherapy is actually much more common than you might think. Many places such as spas, doctor’s offices, and even stores can implement aromatherapy to encourage visitors to feel a certain way. For example, a spa could use citrus and floral essential oils to invite happy, peaceful emotions to their customers.
Another great benefit of aromatherapy can have great results for seniors in memory care in Lakewood. Our sense of smell is often connected to certain memories, and by smelling certain scents, it can become easier to remember things from the past. Of course, this is no replacement for traditional therapies and memory care procedures. However, it can be a fantastic tool to use in addition to other memory care treatments.
Being a senior can come with a lot of its own stresses and difficulties. Aromatherapy can be a wonderful way to build new memories and atmospheres where you need it most. For example, if the smell of eucalyptus helps you feel calmer, try wearing an aromatherapy necklace for things that make you feel stressed out and upset. I personally love using citrus with a tiny hint of lavender for particularly nerve wracking doctor’s appointments.
Creative Ways to Incorporate Aromatherapy
For seniors in assisted living in Lakewood, finding ways to safely incorporate aromatherapy into your life may require some creative thinking. So, here are a few ways you can try aromatherapy without needing to use any flame or heat sources:
Aromatherapy Baths
Aromatherapy Jewelry
Aromatherapy Pillow/Stuffie
Carry-Around Item (Carry the bottles, or an absorbent item with a few drops on it)
Diffusers
Essential Oil Massage
Essential Oil Rollers/Sprays
As you can see, it is super easy to start using essential oils, and figure out what works best for you and your personal needs as a senior. Just get creative, and come up with your own blends to suit every mood and situation!

Do You Feel Memory Problems are Interfering With Your Life?
Do you feel as if memory problems are interfering with your life or have family members started to notice? Medical experts say there may be a distinction between a person noticing the memory loss and others becoming aware of it as this could signal a bigger problem and be an early sign of dementia.
The Harvard Medical School explains the best place to start understanding the problem is to talk to your doctor. While they may not have the proper training to do extensive screening for MCI (mild cognitive impairment), they can rule out other things causing your memory loss such as medications you take or a recent head injury. Steps you can take on your own to improve cognitive function include getting enough sleep each night, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and reducing stress.
After your own physician has completed an examination, and nothing appears to explain your memory loss, it is time to see a specialist. They, or your local Alzheimer’s Association chapter or hospital should be able to recommend a behavioral neurologist or a geriatric psychiatrist. He or she will probably start with a series of written, on the computer, or oral tests to “assess memory, reasoning, attention, language, visual functions, motor functions, and social functions (such as empathy and knowing how to behave appropriately in social situations).”
They will check for “abnormalities in muscle strength, coordination, reflexes, senses, eye movement, and the pupils’ reaction to light, which can signal abnormalities in specific areas of the brain.” In addition, the doctor will check for Parkinson’s, a stroke or tumors, and will probably schedule a hearing and vision test. If indicated, you may have advanced testing such as PET scans or your cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers checked for signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar of Mission Viejo has suites devoted to the individualized care of those with mild to advanced memory impairment. Our Reflections Neighborhood was designed to provide a secure setting, which allows residents to explore their spacious surroundings freely and easily. It’s Important to See a Doctor if Your Worried About Memory Loss
The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that anyone worried about memory loss make an appointment with their health care provider. While we all know it is scary just thinking about the possibility of having Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, the Alzheimer’s Association has a list of reasons why it is to your advantage to know.
The process for getting a diagnosis starts with a full evaluation with a healthcare provider that includes your medical history and any medications you are taking as well as a series of mental status tests. If the initial evaluation indicates problems, your doctor will recommend further physical and neurological exams, diagnostic tests and brain imaging.
One of the top reasons to be evaluated for Alzheimer’s is your symptoms may be from another treatable cause. If it is determined you have Alzheimer’s, experts explain that while there is no cure for the disease, there are treatment options that can lessen the symptoms including memory loss and confusion for a limited time. Also, they say an early diagnosis gives you a better chance of benefiting from treatment.
An early diagnosis also means you may be eligible for clinical trials that could provide some medical benefit. In addition, recent research suggests that certain lifestyle changes such as “controlling blood pressure, stopping smoking, participating in exercise, and staying mentally and socially active, may help preserve cognitive function.”
Perhaps most importantly you will have more time to plan for your future and to do things now, rather than wait. Planning for the future also helps family members know what your wishes are and prevents future feelings of guilt or arguments over your care. The Alzheimer’s Association adds that an early diagnosis can save your family and the U.S. Government money spent on care.

Safety Tips for Older Drivers
Older drivers can still be good, safe drivers, but there are some things to consider both for your safety and the safety of others. The Mayo Clinic recommends that seniors stay as active as possible in their day-to-day life which helps to maintain overall strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Drivers need to be able to turn and look over their shoulder and move their head with ease. They must be able to keep a firm grip on the steering wheel and legs need to be strong enough to apply pressure to the gas pedal or brake.
A senior’s peripheral vision can decrease with age or from certain medications and other eye problems may cause drivers to have trouble seeing in the dark or experience blurred vision. Hearing problems can interfere with detecting sounds of sirens from emergency vehicles or approaching cars. Be vigilant about scheduling vision and hearing tests regularly as part of your wellness care and follow your doctor’s advice as to how often they should be done. Many problems can be corrected if caught early enough.
Remember that certain medications can cause drowsiness so make sure you know the side effects of your prescription drugs and do not drive if you are feeling sleepy. It may be a good idea to limit trips in the car to daylight hours and when the weather is good. Keep in mind that a person’s reaction time slows with age as do their motor skills. You may need to re-evaluate your driving every few months, especially if you find yourself having incidents of accidents that almost happened.
Some safe driving tips for seniors:
Planning before you leave:
Plan to drive on streets you know.
Limit your trips to places that are easy to get to and close to home.
Take routes that let you avoid risky spots like ramps and left turns.
Add extra time for travel if driving conditions are bad.
Don't drive when you are stressed or tired.
While you are driving:
Always wear your seat belt.
Stay off the cell phone.
Avoid distractions such as listening to the radio or having conversations.
Leave a big space, at least two car lengths, between your car and the one in front of you. If you are driving at higher speeds or if the weather is bad, leave even more space between you and the next car.
Make sure there is enough space behind you. (Hint: if someone follows you too closely, slow down so that the person will pass you.)
Use your rear window defroster to always keep the back window clear.
Always keep your headlights on.

Planning for The Future as a Senior
Future planning is a very vital step to take as you age. This is especially true if you are about to retire, or are already retired. Once you are no longer bringing in a working income, you will have to rely on things like social security, savings, and the possibility of making money with a side hustle. However, planning for the future can feel overwhelming. So in this blog, we will be discussing some of the basics that you should have in place to protect your future as a senior living in Lakewood. Keep reading to learn more about what you should consider as you plan for your future.
Where Do You Want to Live?
Knowing where you want to spend your senior years is a very important part of future planning as a senior. You have to consider your lifestyle, and whether you are wanting to age in place, or possibly move to a smaller home, or an assisted/independent living community that caters to your needs. There are many different possibilities when it comes to senior living, so make sure you research what is available in your area; and decide what would be the best fit for your needs and finances. It is also important to consider the possibility of moving with beloved pets, and/or even a companion/significant other.
Are You Prepared for Healthcare/Emergency Costs?
No matter how old or young you are, planning for emergencies is a very vital part of life. However, as a senior, it is possible that the likelihood of an emergency occurring is even higher than it was when you were younger. Our bodies are not as strong as we age, so small injuries can easily become more serious without proper attention. In addition to this, it is possible to develop health issues as we age as well. All of this possible medical treatment will require money, however, and it is important to be prepared for as much as you possibly can. Keep up with regular checkups, and make sure you are always in communication with your doctor about new or changing health concerns. This can help you be more prepared for when an emergency does occur.
What Will Your Hobbies Be?
Having hobbies and things to do as a senior is a perfect way to stay active mentally and physically as a senior. One of the biggest struggles many seniors in retirement have is that they feel like they have no purpose in life, or they feel lonely and bored without having to go to work every day. This is why it is so very important to engage in hobbies and activities that bring you joy and fulfillment. Make sure you always set money aside to use for things that make you happy. We only get one life, and we should always be mindful of making the most of it. Enjoy your golden years–don’t just be waiting for the next problem to come around the corner!
Our mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living Lakewood has to offer. Organizing Tips for Seniors
Staying organized as a senior can sometimes be a difficult task. Things tend to accumulate over time; and if you have never taken the time to downsize, chances are you have a lot of clutter you may need to go through. However, even if you do not have a lot of things to go through, there are still a lot of ways you can make organizing easier and more efficient for yourself as a senior living in Lakewood. Keep reading to learn some valuable organizing tips for seniors, so you can make your home an even more comforting place.
Divide Clutter into Piles
No matter how much stuff you have, it is very likely that you probably have at least a few items you do not really need or use anymore. A great way to get through this is to separate items into three categories: keep, sell/donate, and throw away. You can also add a fourth pile as a “maybe” pile for items you are not sure what you really want to do with. This is a very easy way to get everything out in the open where you can see it, and actually see the progress being made as you get rid of the items you need to. If you do find yourself making the fourth, “maybe” pile, give yourself a ninety day deadline to either toss or give the items away if you have not used them within that ninety days.
Clear All Surfaces
Cluttered surfaces can be a big annoyance and even a hazard for many elderly people. For this reason, it is so important to make sure all your surfaces are completely cleared of clutter and mess. Start with the open surfaces like floors, tables, countertops, shelves, etc. Then, you can make your three (or four) piles from each area and take on your home one room at a time. Once all your outer/open surfaces are clear, you can move on to the surfaces on the inside, such as closets, drawers, cabinets, under beds, etc. This way, all your organizing and decluttering can be done a little bit at a time; rather than all at once. Organizing your home in this way can help you avoid becoming overwhelmed, especially if you are a senior going into memory care in Lakewood.
Keep Things Accessible
One last tip to keep in mind as you organize your home/space, is to keep all your items accessible. It can be hard to do a lot of bending, crouching, and reaching as we age, so being proactive about where things are stored can minimize this issue. For example, rather than keeping your laundry in a basket that is low to the ground, consider replacing it with a taller basket; or even one that also has wheels. This can make doing laundry so much easier, and help you not have to bend down as much to get it done. Get creative and see what else you can make easier for yourself with just a little change.

Immune Boosting Tips for Seniors
For many seniors, taking the time to improve their immune system can be an overwhelming task. With so many articles and different opinions about what is best for certain health conditions, doing your own research can quickly become exhausting. However, when it comes to supporting your immune system, there are really just a few basic things that virtually anyone can accomplish in their everyday life. If you are a senior in assisted living in Lakewood, keep reading to learn more about how you can easily boost your immune system–even if you are in memory care in Lakewood.
Keep Your Hands Clean
Washing your hands consistently is one of the best ways you can support your immune system. Our hands are often very close to our faces, in contact with wounds we may have, and touching food we eat. Any bacteria or viruses on our hands can be easily transferred to the inside of our body, as well as others. For this reason, it is absolutely vital to wash your hands as often as possible. Some hand washing times you can keep in mind include: before and after you eat, after shaking hands with people, after handling a publicly used item, before applying a bandage, before taking medication, and after using the bathroom. Washing your hands consistently is an easy way to help prevent illnesses, and support your immune system in a low-effort way.
Limit Harmful Substances
Alcohol, cigarettes, and other harmful substances are not healthy for anyone to be doing. However, they are things that many people take part in; so if you choose to as well, it is very important to limit them if not cut them off completely. For example, one glass of red wine can have heart health benefits; however, having a lot of wine or other alcohol every day will cause liver damage, as well as other health issues. Cigarettes and cigars have no health benefits, however, and should be immediately cut out if used. These types of substances, as well as harder ones should all be avoided in order for your body to age in as much health as possible. By not smoking and drinking, you are giving your immune system the ability to support your health the way it is supposed to.
Stay Balanced
Eating, hydrating, and sleeping enough are also important ways to help boost your immune system. When it comes to what you eat, make sure you are getting all the nutrients your body needs. If you have some health issues or allergies that make eating difficult, try speaking with a specialist who can help you learn what foods are best for your specific needs. In addition to this, it is vital to be well hydrated. Keep in mind that you should be drinking at least half your weight in ounces of water every day. So, if you weigh 100 pounds, you need to drink 50 ounces of water a day. Finally, getting enough sleep is also another way to support your immune system, as well as the rest of your body, by allowing it to function at full capacity. Older people should be getting between eight and ten hours of sleep every night in order to help boost their immune system naturally.
